Along with city officials and representatives from Arizona State University, Caliber gathered in Mesa on Friday, January 10th to witness the groundbreaking ceremony of a new ASU location and Mesa City Center.
Proposed to open in fall 2021, the building will be home to the ASU Creative Futures Laboratory, a $64 million “innovation hub” located in downtown Mesa. The five-story building will provide programs in digital technology, film production, gaming media arts, and experimental design.
Michael Crow, ASU President and event attendee, pledged his commitment to the City of Mesa and the new campus, “My principle purpose today is to pledge, with all the fidelity that we can offer, our commitment to Mesa, our commitment to this project, our commitment to making this work, the building is a starting point.”
Other projects going into the city include the redevelopment of eight historic buildings located downtown. Purchased by Caliber Co. and project partner Habitat Metro for $7.5 million, the buildings will play an important role in restoring the energy and excitement of the area.
In addition to the work of others, the City of Mesa has already made progress in redeveloping the area. Some improvements include the expansion of the light rail as well as an impressive spring training facility and $100 million arts center.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Mesa Mayor John Giles expressed his excitement regarding the collaboration between ASU, the City of Mesa, and the different developers involved, “I am convinced that this partnership between ASU and the City of Mesa will be a gamechanger — not just for our downtown, but for our community as a whole.”
